The first part of this blog is going to focus on the playthrough of Fran Bow, so SPOILER ALERT!
Everything started with Fran Bow witnessing a tragic loss of her parents, she ran away with her beloved Mr. Midnight (the black cat that Fran had previously received from her parents) into the woods. She passed out and later woke up in Oswald Asylum mental institution for children but without Mr. Midnight.
After Mr. Midnight appearing in her dream everything, she wanted from now on is to escape from the Asylum. She received a strange medicine called Duotine, which can show her different reality, most of the time just bloodier, crazier and scarier version of her own reality. She can see black shadows (Kamalas) standing by every other patient (the only patients in the asylum are little children) and the creature that Fran thinks is responsible for her parent’s death “Remor”. Then with help from other patients and pills, she is able to escape.
The strange sequence is starting in the woods where you can meet giant talking ant, pinecone family and as usual to Fran Bow game a lot of black shadows everywhere. Next, you came across a house where twin sisters Mia and Clara whose are sewed (yes, actually sewed!) together live. In their house you are able to find Mr. Midnight in a golden cage, but you have to complete the task (it’s point and click adventure after all) from sisters first to get the key. After completing the task, witnessing the death of the sister in order to free their soul, and reuniting with Mr. Midnight you’re able to go.
Before you can get home you came to an old bridge, Remor appeared again, destroyed the bridge and Fran fall. After waking up Fran realizes that she became a tree (Yep a tree, you are reading right). She is taking by her new friend (let’s call him Mr. Carrot) to the kingdom Ithersta. Ithersta is a magical place filled with magic and talking ants, trees and vegetable (because fruit is obviously not good enough). The King Ziar said to Fran that only the Great Wizard is able to make her human again. Here she meets nice and fluffy doctor Palontras, Valokas the spirits of light (the opposite to Kamals) and a lot of nice characters (I personally love the most the talking cockroach which was selling poop, for some reason, because in this game nothing make much sense). After the process (which is sooooo long!) is done Fran opens the door to her reality and maybe finally go home.
On the way home Fran and Mr. Midnight find a creature named Itward, he presents himself like an old friend of Fran, he is saying that he told her stories before bed when she was younger (nothing like 5-foot creature with only showing the skull reading you stories for good night <3). Itward with help from Fran is able to repair his ship and promise Fran to take her home before he can do that the ship is taking down by evil Kamalas (because of course it does) and she’s forced to walk to her house.
Before the final ending, she is taken by Dr. Deern (her psychiatrists) to dig up her parents, to find out more clues about the murder (late night digging your parents up, seems like the best exercise before bed). When you opened Fran’s coffin you realize there is Mr. Midnight instead.
She entered the 5th reality (there are actually 5 realities, you know this info form book you can read, that share with you pieces of info, that in the end tell you absolutely nothing, so don’t worry), where she can find Remor and his mother (The Queen of Darkness) Mabuka. Remor is trying to convince you and actually show you the scene of Fran killing her own parents.
The final scene is about realizing, that evil Dr. Oswald is experimenting on twins and that Fran is his perfect subject. When you find out that aunt Grace (she was only at the beginning showing that she took the role of Fran’s parent) was helping Dr. Oswald the whole time Fran tried to kill her but Dr. Oswald shoots Fran. Then Palontras, Mr. Midnight and Itward appeared, healing Fran’s wounds and after that Fran with them, all is flying away (Yeah and they live happily ever after!).
Last words from Fran “I still don’t know many things… But one thing I know… That between guilt and fear… I choose happiness..”
